Using the Canvas API

This course will help technical admins understand, setup, and discover ways to use the Canvas APIs. Both the Canvas REST API and the GraphQL API will be addressed.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

• Understand the structure of APIs
• Define key API terminology
• Understand available documentation and tools to support Canvas API usage at your institution
• Demonstrate understanding of the API documentation to build and run GET calls
• Understand how use the Canvas API documentation and the difference between it and Canvas Live API site
• Uncover what JSON is and how it is used with API requests
• Demonstrate how to run an API request using Postman
• Articulate uses for API requests
• Understand how to run a GET request and drop the data into a spreadsheet
• Demonstrate the ability to map the logic for recursive, chained API requests 
• Use provided resources to gather script snippets necessary for chained, recursive API requests
• Understand what scripting languages are
• Understand how scripting can be used to interact with and build more complex workflows with the Canvas API
• Assess where scripting fits into your API strategy

Please note: You do not need previous experience with APIs to be successful in this course.
